Marathon Dog

Published by Jim under Animals

2009-05-25Here is yet another shot I took at the marathon.  Between participants in the race there would be an occasional solo runner just out for some morning exercise.  I think this dog was having as great a time running with its master.

B17

Published by Jim under Airplanes

2009-05-21On the same day that I was shooting the marathon there must have been some event going on out at the local airport.  A B17 bomber from world war 2 flew overhead creating an absolutely amazing sound with those big engines.  It was a great site to see.  I had the 200mm lens on the camera shooting the athletes, so I pointed it skyward and took a couple of shots.  I wish I could have been out near the airport as it landed.

When I cropped the photo, I left some room in front of the plane to “give it room” to fly into.  It usually works well with any moving subject to make more space in front of the subject than in back of it.

Marathon Photos

Published by Jim under People,Sports

2009-05-16On Saturday, the local YMCA held an annual event called the Famous Idaho Potato Marathon.  This year there were over 2,000 participants. Knowing this ahead of time, my partner and I made sure we had plenty of flash cards and batteries for the cameras and headed out on a great Spring day.  The weather was perfect and everyone seemed excited to be participating.  Here is a shot of one of the marathoners showing the intensity of the event on his face.  I can’t imagine doing this for 26.2 miles.

Squish

Published by Jim under Birds

2009-05-10As mentioned in my last post, mom decided to sit down.  She must have been somewhat gentle, as some of the goslings decided to bear the weight and stick around.

In the Shade

Published by Jim under Birds

2009-05-08Here is another shot from my geese watching adventure.  It was a very warm spring day and the goslings decided it was just a bit too warm and decided to take refuge from the sun under their mom.  At least I assume it was their mom, as I’m no goose expert by any stretch of the imagination.  The goslings stayed there for about 3 minutes before mom decided to sit down, scattering some, but not all of the goslings.

Spring Gosling

Published by Jim under Birds

2009-04-06The place where I work has several large ponds and a lot of grassy areas, making a very popular breading ground for Canada Geese. Every year there are probably close to 100 goslings that break out of their eggs and into the world. They group up fast, but if you catch them when they are only a few days old, you can see something cute such as the one in this photo.

I used a pretty wide aperture on the lens to blur the background which helped this little guy stand out a bit better.  The background was actually the surface of one of the ponds.

Keep that camera with you, as you’ll never know when a good shot will reveal itself.
